we were alone when we were together
you and I both flickered briefly like the flame of a candle
and then we were left alone in the dark with nothing to say
we communicated with words that had no real definition
while our own hearts remained separate in the silence
that love that we shared had no real connection at all
but we were too blind by our own needs to know it
then we were left to wonder if it was really love after all
because we ask what it was that brought us to each other

we were alone when we were together
what need exists that blinds one enough not to know it?
when in the aftermath you begin to doubt your own heart
we only knew of a desire that we shared in the passion
we only knew well the sensuality of that warm touch
why is it we cannot describe what we thought we saw?
it flickered briefly and led us there to a point in time
what we did not speak aloud we could still understand
but the rest of it was never really very clear

we were alone when we were together
our hands felt the warmth of our touching
but even within that warmth we did not feel secure
we would be safe within our own secrets
but it was as if we had whispered them all in vain
if we never got a real chance in our own time
was it not maybe because it was never meant to be?
life certainly has a funny way of ensuring
that ecstasy is just a heartbeat and breath away

we were alone when we were together
love is sometimes just an illusion that escapes us
for whatever reason that it may have to die
just as surely as it appears upon the horizon
just as quickly as when we try harder to hold on
like the waves of an ocean when they get too high
they overcome us and pull us in farther out to sea
afraid of drowning in the submission of its influence
when we tried harder to escape the tide’s power

we were alone when we were together
while we remained there in the midnight hour
with very little if anything to say to one another
and the futility of lovemaking was the only reward
when our only line of communication was that touch
when making love is not the same as being in love
but we refuse nevertheless to let it just slip away
when our fear of being alone leads us to deep solitude
and we try desperately to hold on to those threads

we were alone when we were together
when we forgot how to listen to one another
and we could no longer hear the music that played
when we could not remember each other’s dreams
when we could no longer hear our own heartbeat
when we looked into blank faces as we made love
and could see that shared look of love no longer existed
replaced by a vacant stare as if we were somewhere else
and the few remaining kisses in the dark said nothing

Superb! Very sad but I've seen it happening to some close ones.

This poem reminds me of the maxim I've held since being introduced to it many years ago while studying Zen. To think object-love is to risk never knowing the love-within and thus to always seek to be in love with someone/something rather than pursuing the conjoining of a "state of love" with someone/something. Thus, "I am in love with you" takes on special importance and spiritual meaning, as your poem so adroitly allows its subtext to whisper.

Sometimes there is silence even when words are spoken. The worst kind of loneliness. So well done! ~Elizabeth

So superbly written and delivered. This took my breath away, it was exactly how I felt when I was deciding to leave my ex husband after 30 years of marriage So many people stay in loveless marriages for comfort, security, or "for the kids". Never any good reasons to do that. You are such a brilliant writer, I bow down to your magnificent talent!!!

Can two people fall so far out of love that there is no hope for saving it? Yes, it does happen, but if one can be in love once, then it can happen again.
Power of Positive thinking shall get you where you want to be.

Much peace, love and light,
Amber

I especially enjoyed the references to the ocean, because love can be just as overwhelming and, dare I say majestic? Beautifully penned, Amor.

1989 - 2011? A WORK OF THIS TYPE DOES NOT COME EASY. THIS IS A FINE SHARING THAT SUMS UP PERFECTLY THE REALITIES THAT, SADLY, APPEAR AND THAT ARE EVENTUALLY...ACCEPTED...BY BOTH INVOLVED, WHEN THEY FIND THEMSELVES STILL TOGETHER...BUT...ALONE. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Your writing was brilliant as it always is. But the subject matter is a downward spiral. But you will find out in your life love will abound to you again.

Very nicely written. Interesting, too, but it's always unfortunate when love dies and you are only left to wonder what happened. It's nice to meet you, I'm new here.

Amor, I can so relate to this poem! What we feel in the beginning can change over time...Married 19 years and only felt the love when we first met. I never felt the spark but I felt comfort. I have been forced to stay with someone I feel out of love with because of pride. I am finally realizing that my time is running out. Always told I am a run down car with the bumper falling off and know one will want my autistic son! Now I am finally breaking free and thinking about me! So much truth in this poem that many can relate to...Sometimes love last forever and other times it doesn't...We can't make another stay in love with us and they can't make us stay in love with them. What i do know is there are alot more fish in the sea and the one that is perfect for you will come around when least expected....If love is meant to be it will be...Take care, Chessly

Many (probably most) reading this will identify with it
in very personal ways, its truths their own..

"...afraid of drowning in the submission of its influence..."
is perfectly said, Amor,

"...and the few remaining kisses in the dark said nothing"

says a hell of a lot.
Yes!

This reaches to the core, so well crafted and profound!
There is such great joy in feeling connected, in meeting another in that inner place, and you capture the desperation of the soul that knows there is a much richer experience possible, but is unable to experience that with the person they are with.
Blessings,
Christine
