It's true , ignorance is bliss.

As a kid,
My mouth was a disposal,
My stomach the sewer

We worked the liquor store
Down the street and around the corner
In pairs.

One would be inside trolling,
Looking suspicious,
While the second was out back
Crawling under the fence
To snag empty pop bottles.

We recycled that money
By buying more Dr. Pepper and Seven Up
From the same store.

We went hunting
For unbroken empties
Alongside the road
And used that free booty to buy
Babe Ruth, Abba Zaba and Mars Bars.

When it was time for lunch,
We ate
The chili cheese dog with sauerkraut and mustard.
It settled in our stomachs
Like boiled acid around a hunk of lead.

But it sure tasted good
To a ten-year-old
That didn’t know any better.

Lloyd,
This explodes with life, the details and images so right; many great lines here but my favourite is, "Like boiled acid around a hunk of lead." Vivid and excellent!

This is great, Lloyd, and reminds me of similar incidents from my
boyhood days of hunting for empties--always a treasure find--to keep
me and my cousin in chili dogs and pop and Saturday morning movies.
