BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD GO I?

The wind blows a tin can Slowly across the way Wrapping the dirty blanket around her Aching to chase the cold away She hides from the stares Trying hard not to care But tracing the wrinkles and grime There flows a silent tear ***************************** She fights a wayward cat For a morsel of food she found Her only feast for the day Eaten from a hard, cold ground Every hour that passes by Seems like one long, hard day She sits alone, cold and hungry Wondering how she got this way *************************** Somewhere tangled up in time She lost her family, her home Desolate she roams the streets All she cared about is gone Nothing but the icy coldness And the clothes on her back Just a few meager belongings Stuffed inside a paper sack ************************* The wind blows a tin can Slowly across the way Wrapping the dirty blanket around her Aching to chase the cold away (C) Linda Hill 2008**

Linda this poem rekindled a fire inside me. There are a quarter million veterans in this country that we know about, that will sleep on heating vents and under bridges tonight, and the plight for homeless people in general in this country is much more that of the veterans and is astronomincal! It saddens me when our government spends billions of dollars around the world to help people in other countries, while people in America suffer especially the working elderly who thought they were retired. God please forgive us for our greed and lack of compassion for our people. I have been feeding the veterans & homeless twice a year for the past twelve years in Cass Park and we need to get people off the street, we have to do it not the government! The fire burns endlessly in my soul and may your wonderful poem induce others to act! Peace!!!

there is such a poignant reality to your poem, Linda. Now with home foreclosures, how many more families will be added to our streets. Why are the petroleum companies, who are making $billions profit, not building family shelters to assist? Well...greed finds no compassion...sadly!

Your ability to see through the eyes of this lost soul and feel her pain and lonliness is amazing. I have worked with the homeless in the past and it is surprizing how thin the line is between someone working and having a family to being unemployed and on the street. The old saying "there but for the grace of God goes I" is pretty accurate and I encourage all to dig deep to help the organizations out there struggling to help these people survive.

This is beautifully written with vivid images of what it might be like to be in such a position. The "Cry Of The Homeless" is a sad cry, and unfortunately is not heard by many. Well done.
