Poetry I wrote this evening, 7-6-08.

The Only Chance we’ll Have

The sands of time run very slow
Impatient children watch them fall
Cascading like cold syrup goes
Your growing life appears to stall

At seventeen you shake the glass
Attempting to speed your fate
You soon discover the hurried flash
Of youthful dreams and what awaits

Your older now, the sands they speed
Your life pace quickens each passing day
The hurry in you life and needs
You curse the hourglass and pray

At sixty years, I’ve seen it all
The good the bad the in-between
The days they pass, we make each call
Experience is what we’ve seen

Choices made are debts unpaid
Once is all the chance we get
Those life choices must be made
To make that journey a very good bet

We will never pass this way again
That one pass is up to you
Like boarding on a passing train
Just one chance to make it through

The sands of time now quickly flow
You wish it wouldn’t be
If wasted time is all you know
So many things yet to see

It would be nice to start over and experience new things I didn't do on this trip. After sixty-three years, I do not think I have any complaints. After all, I made it this far and managed to do quite a bit. I stop and look back along my long, winding, crooked path and see so much left to write about.
