The Silent Wolf
1999

This wolf is silent, moving like a ghost through the night,
Attacking innocents, first on the left side, next on the right.

Not a sound does the wolf make as he downs his prey,
However, he leaves his mark on them as he sulks away.

Not a bite mark to be found when his deed is done,
The wolf has attacked and now he is back on the run.

The victim is left lying in bed fast asleep, unaware,
Of the ravage done to her body, the wolf had no care.

She awakes, very weak, wanting only to cry,
Staggering to the mirror, she is wondering why.

Her hand softly brushes across her neck and her cheek,
Questioning the red rash and her skin that weeps.

Her joints are stiff as she stumbles back to the bed,
Softly crying, she is scared by the fears in her head.

She clasps her head with hands swollen and blue.
The wolf has slipped out, she is left with no clue.

Lupus means wolf in some foreign tongue,
For this young woman, the fight has just begun.

Dear Sherry,
Once again, you have enabled those of us who are partners in "Surviving the Wolf" to be able to empathize with you as we each face this Demon (The Wolf) each day of our lives. Thank you! God bless you, dear, and may you continue to promote our stuggle, and our survival!
Love,
Mary

Sometimes it is amazing to look back and realize that although I was diagnosed with the Wolf since 1981, my eyes still get teary when I find out that another sufferer has been added to his prey. Your poem was beautiful Sherry....beautiful because it conveys with clarity and deepness what each of us goes through from the moment we wake up and start a new day. The only way I have been able to deal with Lupus, believe it or not, is by becoming friends with the Wolf. While I have not accepted the disease, I have accepted the fact that my life is to be lived in a different way. Thus, the Wolf is my friend because it makes me realize and value more the precious moments of well being. It has also made me more compassionate towards others and has taught me to listen more intently. When I feel good, I kiss the ground I walk on, when I feel awfully sick, I take it easy, cry now and then, but nevertheless try to be positive and believe wholeheartedly that this too shall pass. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for all you have done in promoting Lupus awareness and hope that God will keep the doors open for you and help you with this amazing task. Many blessings to you also.
Christa

I was DX in 1999 and I too not long after wrote a poem on how I felt. It was helpful and it was just as helpful to read from another view and know what is being said and meant by each word you wrote. Great Job :)

Sherry you moved me to tears. There are several in the family that have lupus and do not really speak of it. You have made me more aware of what they are going through.

It is so hard to have a disease that is "silent". You never know what is around the corner. Your poem just fits what we all have endured...one day fine and the next rashy and full of pain. Thanks so much for putting your heart and words for us to share.

Sherry,
Everytime I've read this, I've been struck again by the first shock of this diagnosis, the trauma of intense pain and the struggle to cope, as you movingly describe. These words, straight from your heart, hit home for us all and now, in publishing your new novel, you prove that it is possible to outrun Ol' Wolfie to your dreams and make them come true. Thank you, Sherry, for sharing!
