This was written when Lt. Hultgreen was posthumously being torn to pieces by her superiors in the process of finding out what went wrong. It was finally concluded that she did nothing wrong, it was jet engine failure. Imagine that. And of course, no one blamed the teacher on board the shuttle for anything. Well, that's fair. She wasn't responsible for anything, either. Just along for the ride.

TOP GUN

            Dedicated to the memory of
            Kara Spears Hultgreen, Lieutenant, USN

You flew willingly into harm’s way
Barely respected and rarely welcomed
As part of that brotherhood
Which – having had its tail
Caught on its own hook
Of abuse and discrimination –
Denied your worth.
and yet you flew on,
            for the love of it,
                        for the life of it.
And on the day a flawed engine
Pinwheeled your smile into eternity,
The circle closed its ranks,
Displaying smug satisfaction
Barely disguised as mourning
For one not their own.
Unlike the teacher atomized in space,
An uncontested heroine,
Who, being noncombative,
Was only along for the ride.

Powerful memorial to a lady pilot, who soars in evocative lines, where man's smugness of her achievement cannot touch her now. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
