-- When the Hours Have Passed By --

John Herlihy

When the hours have passed by,

The day follows its own demise.

Twilight descends into night’s sigh,

The sight held dear in God’s eyes.

When the days have passed by,

The months also find their exile.

The seasons thru all weathers ply,

Sing their song as they linger awhile.

When the months have passed on,

The year descends into memory’s well.

Year of the goat, year of the fawn,

The years remember what each will tell.

When the years have passed on,

The life proudly nods its head.

All people thru life’s turmoil drawn,

As death lays down to rest its head.

When all lives have passed by,

A century will have come to a close.

Passed beyond this side of the sky,

To live again for history to disclose.

When the centuries have passed by,

The millennium rides on time’s arrow.

Thru the darkness of deep space to fly,

With the sweet innocence of a sparrow.

When the millennia have passed into mist,

Unbounded time as a bird finally set free.

To roam endlessly among those blessed,

A celestial procession in a timeless sea.

All things forever pass by,

Mementos from the well of eternity.

On God’s mercy may the world rely,

On its grand journey thru infinity.

For me this felt like a Zoom out, sort of a Ken Burns slow pan experience of the reveal. It accomplishes a feeling of journey so impersonal* and inclusive. I especially liked these lines: “All people thru life’s turmoil drawn,/As death lays down to rest its head.” and “Passed beyond this side of the sky,/“ Unique way of separating manifested life and ethereal life.
*By impersonal I mean not ‘just a single life,’ but all life. Connectivity. I like it.* ~~ djl

Fine imagery in this. I couldn't help but feel an element of melancholy woven in amongst the words. Perhaps that's just me though. We don't have much of a choice, as life moves on and we move on with it. All life is in the hands of the Creator. Enjoyed this... r
