After the tower of Babel has risen and the continents have converged into Pangea, Kristen finds comfort in the personification of Death while mourning her late father. After her breakthrough with Death, her friends fear something has happened to her and set out to rescue her from Fate and the Father of Lies.
The Earth is a different place after the continental convergence, but teenage girls are facing the same social challenges while transitioning from high school and into the real world where magic and science now co-exist.
Kristen is skipping school and coping with the loss of her father when she meets the grim reaper under an old washed-out shop of curiosities in the abandoned Art District. While he isn’t there to administer her the death touch, he is there to help her kill Time.
Over the course of the day, Kristen begins to get an odd feeling that she is playing a part in the stories that the curious deadhead is sharing with her. Death introduces her to the personifications of Time, Fate, Mother Nature, and the Father of Lies, who will have to be thwarted if Kristen expects to obtain her visa.
After her breakthrough experience with Death, things get weird for her and her crew. John, Levi, Gunner, and Beav start experiencing some terrifying magic of their own while preparing for their paintball game down in the swamp. When they suspect something bad has happened to Kristen, they embark on a rescue mission fit for the birds.
The Death of Science is a Novel Introduction to Rootworld and a good starting point to embark on your own adventure into a vast and multi-faceted universe that is oddly reminiscent of the one we live in today.
Welcome to the Satirical Science Fiction Fantasy realm of Rootworld.
Excerpt
“You mean the Devil is real, too?” Kristen cried.
Geesh. She was only just starting to doubt Santa Clause. She’d been reasonably certain that the Easter bunny was a hoax, but now she couldn’t know what to think!
The Reaper seemed to be peering off into the cave, which Kristen couldn’t see from this angle. He looked contemplative.
Kristen could hardly stand the silence.
“Well?” she demanded. “I just thought our parents made that up to scare us!”
Death turned his head up to her so she could look into the silver flicker of his sockets again and she knew what he said was true. The Devil would be as real as Death. Just because the Reaper told her that it wasn’t her time, didn’t mean that her time would never come.
The same must be true of Satan!
“Don’t fear the father of lies, child,” The skull said to her through its emotionless stare. Yet, the inflection had a bit of sympathy in it. “But be wary of his temptations. It is easy to be tricked by the scoundrel.”
Death thought better than telling her his real purpose here, but the girl was kind of growing on him. Besides, Fate hadn’t forbade him to do anything so specific…
“In fact,” he said to Kristen, “You and I are here because Fate herself is attempting to remedy a bargain the Devil tricked her into.”
Kristen wasn’t sure she could wrap her head around all of this. If Death’s persona looked like a skeleton, she wondered what the Devil’s would look like, or furthermore, what Fate’s would resemble.
“You mean Fate is real, too!”
She briefly tried to think of any other strange beings that she may be missing and then gave it up.
“I think you know the answer to that. Well, let’s just say when it comes to the fickle fingers of Fate. Her fingers, that is. I do as directed.
“You can’t blame her. I mean, what’s a girl to do when the loom is running out of thread? God wouldn’t intervene. Only way to keep weaving the very fabric of reality was to do the unmentionable.”
“Do you mean,” Kristen said blithely, “make a deal with the Devil? She really did it?”
“And I’d guess you would do it too if you found yourself at the end of your line,” said Death.
