Pre - Deployment and Deployment Advice That Helps Make a Difference…

  • Don’t Be Fake Be Real – If the emotional stress of deployment is getting to you then do not pretend to act as if everything is ok when it's really not. Find someone you can trust and confide in. Someone you feel comfortable sharing your true emotions with on a regular basis. Just because you are, a soldier does not mean you have to act like a tough person all the time. You not alone I guarantee everyone feel the same way you do.

  • (Me Time) Is Very Important Especially If You are Married - When you are away from each other for long periods at a time a lot can change between two people. That is why it is vital to make sure the both of you have some quality time together when you are home. Try to have a plan in place to have someone watch your children on occasion so that you can have some alone time.

  • Church - Do not be embarrassed to ask your church or synagogue how they can help you through the tough times you may experience during deployment. Ask for suggestions, advice, tips etc… Having someone from your church or synagogue to help you and keep up with how you are doing...regularly is extremely beneficial and it will help you tremendously during the hardships you may experience during deployment.

  • Depression - Plan a coping strategy for when you are feeling down and you are not your normal 100% self. Depression can dig you in a deep hole so when you begin to feel down try to pick up the phone and get some emotional back up. Get out of the house and get involved in your community. Feelings a self-accomplishment goes a long way. It is hard to ask for help when you are struggling with depression, but if you notice the signs of depression occurring tackle it before it tackles you. Close friends and family can be a great support.

  • You Are What You Eat (Diet) - Eat healthy and do not skip meals. The food you put in your body plays a big role in how you feel and skip meals. Skipping meals makes a person nervous, alter the way you act, and even get you sick.

  • Creating A Journal - Consider writing a journal. You and your spouse will treasure this and it will help you emotionally cope with the many struggles you are encountering.

  • Are You Going To Move Home With Your Family, Stay at the Military Installation? Each situation is unique. Consider the level of support you and your family will receive with each option. The military community tends to offer more emotional support from others who have been there...done that. Moving home may provide more hands on support if you are working full time.
Join Support Groups- Seek out others who are going through the same thing and understand what you are going through. Even if you are not near a military installation, there are ways to connect with others, and it will help you tremendously in the long run

There is help all around you. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is one of the hardest things for someone to do. People often feel like asking for help means that they are weak or not good enough, which is not the case. No one can be superman; everyone needs a hand once and a while. Asking for help does not make you any less of a person. Often it is harder to ask for help than to go on alone without it. Do not be afraid to ask, they there are hundreds of people more than willing to lend a hand or a shoulder to cry on and they all can relate to what you are going through.
