Ice

she says quietly.

Stalagmite, stalactite:

you and me

alone in a cave.

Ice

answers he softly,

hard, cold and brittle:

hiding way out here

alone in a cave.

Ice

whispers the wind,

shards of frozen snow

flashing ice light,

breath from a cave.

Ice

frozen stone cracks:

too warm, too soft

human bodies unfit

hunger in a cave.

Ice

screams the storm

howling in our minds:

no human voices answer

to warm a cave.

Ice

says Death smiling

his toothy smile

not unsympathetically

empties a cave.

A cave is bad enough. An ice cave is worse. No country for either young or old man or woman for that matter. Only death. Maybe to be thawed out in a millennium.

Quiet a contrast in this poem. I enjoyed the beginning but not about how it ends.
