Volunteer Nasturtiums and Wild Sweet-Peas
for my son Stevie II and his friend Julia
Volunteer nasturtiums and wild sweet-peas
There just as they were a hundred years ago
Saved in my own backyard by the likes of these
My immortal soul decides to not let go
Of the promise offered me this day in May
By the things I know and which I do not know
Since I like it here I will not go away
I can go out wandering but then come back
Visit with these hummingbirds and buzzing bees
What I have is more important than my lack
It must be for a reason I am like this
And the way I am is not so bad to me
Here in my backyard embracing this sweet kiss
Happy happenstance of serendipity
Saved in my own backyard by the likes of these
Volunteer nasturtiums and wild sweet-peas
