Smoking to keep from eating Eating to keep from smoking And through it all the lonely heart keeps beating "If this is life" you say "you must be joking" (Except this is not really funny)
What the searching mouth seeks cannot be found Life drifts away like smoke The heart is run to ground Bleeding out its life in love like honey A sweet yet tasteless joke
The cycle repeats again and again Reducing all to feces and to ash Into the trash and down the drain Down the drain and into the trash Curiously thrilling if not without pain
Horrifyingly satisfying dying Like watching a train in a slow-motion crash "If this is life" you say "you must be joking" (Except this is not really funny) Trying to keep from choking
Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
