Sui Generis

for my friend Philip Matogo

I find myself one of a kind but I
Want to live it up and not give up and die
Though haunted to and having wanted to
Before but no more now I know what to do
Having lived it down to rise like the sun
Sui generis as a species of one

They tell me I fell like a star one day
When there was an omen in the sky they say
Freak thunder and lightning when I was born
Geographically Californian
A freak of nature for a unicorn
Astrologically Capricornian

Heretical theologically
Poetical but theoretically
An illogical manic-depressive
Maniacally logical obsessive
Paranoid schizophrenic psychotic
Son of a hitman who was a poet too
Rising like the sun falling like a star

If you are ready for something exotic
Doing my best brings out the best in me
Solitarily pursuing destiny
In human solidarity I find
Myself one of a kind but the human kind
If only in the distance from afar

Quixotically sui generis
But my species being human doing this

We survived the Missouri Synod! One must be assertive and it helps to be crazy (generic). This write has got to be one of your best.

Love ya!

We are all rather uniquely on our own. But you according to your poem and other poems, are certainly, one-of-a-kind.

I'm also a humanitarian who likes to watch humanity from afar. Let me see. Maybe I'm compulsive and logical. Hopefully, not psychotic or manic-depressive. We are all a composite of our strange impulses. For mine, I would include shopaholic and hypersensitive. I love your poems. They make me think and play with words.

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
