A New Thing
A frail old thing I have a new thing
Feet failing unavailingly
Greet me with a singular tingling
From having to put up with me
Down there for too long upstandingly
Having to be put up to bring
Them back up to functionality
Or else tingling demandingly
Rebelling against me by swelling
Seeing me being sixty-three
Has been a surprising thing to see
Realizing mortality
When the time of my life is telling
Another memento mori
Insisting on twisting my story
Not the right time to give up yet
But write it down and live up to it
As I live up to sixty-four
I treat my feet understandingly
Not writing this at my table
Too uprightly I might be able
To keep this thing from happening
On my bed instead recumbently
Should they put up with me some more
I would put my feet up faithfully
Every day for the duration
For what they put up with from me for
However long to be may be
Befriending my feet toward the ending
Meeting them halfway we agree
At both ends toward our destination
Stepwise ending up transcending
To do something new through a new thing
Like nothing I knew of before
