Through the Mirror

I was of a mind like a steel trap
Headily unsteady and ready to snap
But I lost it on the way to be
The way I am now in my insanity
The inanity of vanity
Was what I would look in the mirror and see

Turning away then to look within
To be without was what it took to begin
Albeit absentmindedly through
A crack in society down all the way
To find myself reminded of me
Being otherwise seeing others were too
Learning the hard way like I had to

With the others in the solidarity
Spoken within the brokenness of
Each other to find another kind of love
Reflected in our humanity
Though this was disrespected in other eyes
Because of our being otherwise

Seeing us back to being human down there
Through the crack I saw us everywhere
More clearly than in the mirror of a mind
Like a steel trap that snapped shut behind
The glass that had always been cracked anyway
Of what had passed for reality
I had to go mad and break through to come true

There was a nun who would always pray
If you asked her to as something she could do
Where I went when I was sent away
So I asked her to and she did every day
And Rita the ballet dancer who
Said I was fit too and read my poetry

In that lockdown psych ward then I knew
When I lost my mind I found my humankind

 Reviews of "Through the Mirror"

My brother was in lock down after his time in the Army. His platoon was sprayed with some experimental gas. A few of them were affected, one being him. I met a Dr. Kats who was an inmate in the same V.A. hospital. He told me he was there from Berkeley and that he had discovered the cure for cancer. O.K.. Why would they displace this doctor to N.E. Ohio? He told me there is a very thin line between sanity and insanity. Ya know? I came to believe! 'Enjoyed your write a lot, Steven.

Love ya!
