Is This All There Is?

A blank page sets the stage
For the way that life has gone
My age isn’t the outrage
It’s the way I’ve spent it

I always wished there wasn’t anguish
But life isn’t built that way
A tarnished one is what I was dished
I can’t help but want it different

How do I rearrange this lives exchange
To make it fit me better
I feel shortchanged and so estranged
From a life that’s let me down

It’s not only me that needs to see
But my children need too also
That I had to flee to save us three
Or all of us would have died

So unfair to live a nightmare
Even worse to think you’re dreaming
How does one repair all the despair
That gathers all around you

Living in dusty rooms of darkened gloom
Never letting in the light
Becoming entombed in this vacuum
Afraid of living another lie

What’s real seems so surreal
The difference I can’t make
All these feelings send my head reeling
And I hide from what I can’t take.

Dee, if my heart was not already broken you would make it so.
But it is broken hearts that can heal others...as you do.

Isn't it something how we all can so identify with this. The excellent way you wrote it is one reason!

Oh Dee!
This one grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go!

"What’s real seems so surreal
The difference I can’t make
All these feelings send my head reeling
And I hide from what I can’t take."

I felt every word of this poem!
That last line keeps replaying in my head!

Hugs,
Maria
