Taming Your Terrible Twin
By
Bill Cottringer
We all have twins within—
The best self we strive for,
The bad self we can’t cure;
Should we work on being better?
Or improving our bad self?
Strengths or weaknesses—
Increasing honesty, empathy,
Love, humility and generosity;
Or decreasing lying, jealousy,
Insensitivity, ego and anger?
Or do both at the same time?
Trying to do too much,
Results in too little getting done;
So, when all is said and done,
It might be better to accept,
The whole package we came in,
A family of dueling twins;
After all, can we really accept,
The unacceptable parts of us?
Even this unacceptable reality?
We often try and try again,
But when we try too much,
We usually get too little;
The answer to this dilemma?
Accept what you can,
And let go of the rest.
In the end,
This will define who we are,
Not who we want to be,
Although both are acceptable,
As it doesn’t really matter.

1. We all have dark-sides and a bad self competing with our efforts to self-actualize into our best self. This is a perpetual battle.
2. Since we really can't control our bad self's thoughts and feelings, we can at least try to "manage" how these things get translated from our brains and come out of our mouths and get done with our hands.
Today emotional intelligence is a valuable skill to be successful interpersonal relationships. And, this is mainly self-management--striving to practice positive, productive behaviors and limit the destructiveness of negative, unproductive behaviors. But even with this being said, there is usually a time and place for both terrible twins within to have their fair airtime. Thanks for your comments. Bill C.
