I wish this were fiction. Sadly it is not

Poem Artwork

How do I say this?

Mom, you have cancer

Ovarian cancer

Advanced

Prognosis, grim

I will tell you this weekend

When we can absorb the terrible news

Together without distraction

I know I will tell you

And within a few moments

Tell you again

And you might recall

Or not

For after a moment

What I tell you

Typically vanishes

But this…….?

I watch

As the ominous winter storm clouds approach

I watch

As your autumn shadows etched into my soul begin to retreat

Stealing with them the mind’s gallows that swallows whole

 Your memories lost each day

I watch

Each day as you sleep a little more, eat a little less

I wait

For the storm has yet to begin and though all past ravages

Will be swept aside

Like pebbles against a tidal wave

I hope

For the storm to be a gentle spring shower

Avoiding the torrential blasts that in the end bring calm

But in their wake create chaos and anger and pain

I see no spring saplings on this horizon

No daffodils

No cherry blossoms

I pray

For the words that I will need today

And the strength we will need tomorrow

As we look ahead to a horizon unknown

What a beautiful but sad poem. My parents passed on before their time, and it's a thing we have no control over. But no one can take our memories.

Well written piece from the heart.

We are praying with you. "As we look ahead to a horizon unknown." There is no pain in death. It is the journey of getting there. Heaven is our eternal home.

Of course, the blessing here is your mother not knowing, not being able to retain the terrible fact, not having to face the fear. She came into this world not knowing, and she'll leave it not knowing. But you know and you touch me deeply with your sorrow and your search for strenght to face the ultimate. That's what is most important in this poem. The fact that it's the best one you've done that I've seen is wonderful, but secondary. What counts most is your " cry of the heart".

As she told you, sweetheart, she feels ready to join your father and laugh and love again. We know the next months will be harder than all the ones that have preceded them. . . spring and summer will bloom again, but maybe not this year. It is a long journey through grief, though you have a head start, and your writing will help you too. You have written this pain so well. e

"...I wish this were fiction. Sadly it is not..." To the ones that had been through that heart crushing moments, your poem makes them realize that they weren't alone and then...to wonder why be the chosen to speak, how reconciling the "that's life" with "it's no fair"

Not an easy conversation to have. I had almost the exact same situation with my grandmother. She had Alzheimer's and then contracted cancer. Does the Alzheimer's now in some way only God understands become a blessing, which dulls the edge of the other affliction? Many things to ponder. I'm sorry for your situation.Hard to be strong. One can only turn things over and return the love and kindness, as a final act of love and kindness, all that which was given to you by her. Sad this life sometimes. Tough moments which can grind the best of us to a pulp. This poetry was one of your best. Straight from the heart. Gripped with emotion. Beautiful. Hang in there buddy. Keep writing. Your greatest contributions, galvanized in a crucible of pain and experience, most certainly lie before you.

All in you is lead, your hands your tongue, your heart, I can feel it in every word you wrote, how will you be able to lift your soul to accomplish the task you must do, only with the help of Angels, your prayers, their lightness of wing and light, we, all of us, can pray, so that they may help you in this heartbreaking task, and bring the love and light you now need, to help your mom and you.
I am certain all will, as I am, I am sending them now. May heaven hold you, and your mom, in it's arms. Hugs! Jasmin Horst

Eileen? I am so sorry. So heavy a burden has been handed down, may my prayers lighten your load a bit. Just know people care and I will be praying for you. Hugs, Liz

That horizon will be in God's heavenly bliss. I am so sorry but will keep her in my prayers and you also as you deal with the coming loss of your mom.
