It is hard to recall all the little things in your life, often what really went on is clouded by the larger picture. Sometimes it is needed for us be kind to ourselves, fill the gaps with imagination.
I guess that kind of thinking would help out a tortured soul who had a bad childhood. I can still remember almost every bad time because it was imprinted by emotion on my mind. However, the bad times were brief and did little damage to an otherwise very happy and wonderful childhood so many at that time didn't have.
