so there is this guy you’ve known for a while,
who lives on another continent.
one day you meet face to face,
starting out your first date
at the Home Depot.
walking around the store
you try to show off
that you’re no ordinary chick,
'cause you love Home Depot.
just as you reach the dead-end
in the power tools aisle
the guy says to you,
“what do you buy here that you like this store so much?”
damn, you’re thinking ‘he’s got me now.’
“duh, uh, I buy hardware, yeah, hardware…
stuff to hang my paintings up with,
light bulbs and garden supplies.”
he gives you a funny look,
but you’re pretty sure it was a clean save.
the two of you walk down the toilet seat aisle
chatting about the merits and demerits of each one
trying to decide which one you would buy,
saying, “even though this one costs more it will hold up longer,”
when he goes, (and this is so cool, I know you’re going to love this)
“look at us, talking like an old married couple.”
and you think you are just gonna die
because HE’S RIGHT!
you feel soooo comfortable with him.
nervously you giggle, say something like
“yeah, how dumb are we?”
you look at him
he’s looking at you
his head cocked
eyes sparkling
and you know…
this isn’t going to be your last trip
to the hardware store.
you’re darling has taken up
permanent residence in your heart
and no matter how many remodeling projects
the relationship will undergo
you love the hell out of him
and he loves you too.
I met Jerome on a busy city street in Baltimore, Maryland, when he was forty-five years old. On that particular day, I was out and about, enjoying a much-needed day off from work.
I wanted to purchase a sukiyaki sub. I parked my car in an area of
