Happy Fourth of July!

Poem Artwork

Fortissimo Fourth

I was rolled along in a red barrow that year

Bare summer feet and a big bass drum

My father smiling alongside

Firing up whopping booms with his winks

My mother buzzing about

With her beehive of bufonted beauties Ba Boom!

Beloved vespals vaunting vast wisdom and virtuous wiles Ba Bam!

As I rolled along, of great import Boom Boom Boom!

And to my dream of a shining future Bam!

As a full size bass drummer Bum Bum!

Until we reached the popsicles at the end

And oh I did love popsicles, save only orange

With that disgusting juice swarming around my tongue

I’d be deeply hurt in a very loud way if

They gave me orange

And then we’d wander back home

Arm in arm, popsicles sticking us together ~~~

Somehow time grew scarce

And that big bass boom

Everything you write stirs emotions and personal memories. We were kind of poor growing up so mom made popsicles out of kool-ade in ice cube trays. The real ones were always a treat....even the orange ones. Patrick

An immensely enjoyable and vivid capture, Christine, and I like how the child's eye view is so wonderfully focussed on the brash sounds and popsicles which flavour and orchestrate every detail of the moment! Reminds me of waking at 0700 on St Patrick's Day in Maddison Avenue in 2010 to the sound of an Irish street parade: the Ba Boom's were even in my bed, I'm sure!! :)) xx

Great nostalgic poem, Christine. Words that give me the feeling of many long past days and years when your world was innocent and sweet and love was walking arm in arm with your father licking a green, or red or grape flavored popsicle.

Excellant writing Christine, this flashed me back in time to a young lad in a Cadet uniform marching in a parade, the weight of the drum more than the weight of the lad and yea, you guessed it..that lad was I and yes there was nothing better than a popsicle on a hot day...my favorite was root beer. Thanks for taking me back in time.

Well....orange is okay if it's a Creamsicle, but not orange twins...ugh!
The big bass drum felt to me like my heart pounding in my chest.
And did you have those very scary Indians in your parade?
This is a cute, memory-invoking poem! I'll bet you were adorable in your red wheel- barrow!

There comes a time when we all miss the past.
We think back
And realize it went by sooooo fast.

I always love how you put your own personal stamp on all your poems

Set your flags at half mast.
Life is a battle
It gives you a time to mourn
while still all around babies are being born.

What a beautiful vision of your childhood Christine, and actually an echo to many from our era. How I also loved Popsicle's as a child with all their stickiness and face and fingers left red with that delicious juice that dripped everywhere! Like you I was not a fan of the orange ones :)

But what a lovely view for a 4th so obviously celebrated and picturing you as a child being pulled along in your barrow! Ah how I remember those lovely days and the excitement it brought to my wee eyes.

Wonderful Christine, thank you for a lovely walk to the past of joy and treasures of the the day
