At last, I can compose something short in this popular genre, too
It seems unbelievable
In the bright sunlight,
But you never know,
When and where
Ms. Misfortune
Overtakes you
By your throat.
At that, the courage
And sportsmanship
Which you've learned
Practicing in gym
And in the ring --
All can leave you
In front of a street gang.
I'd rather be knocked
In the head by a baseball bat
Than go through
Those crooked streets again.
Yes, it is fear, primeval fear
Of the unknown outlet.
But to me, it is not just that.
Can these people stab me
In the back once I break back?
As a strategy says, 'Haste to retreat
To fight another day' only
When you can do it swiftly;
Otherwise fight, like a beast at bay,
To the bitter end to protect yourself
(It sounds like another strategy, right?).
'Sounds like you just walked through Cleveland, Ohio at night! Stay to the paths you know. Especially these days when one can buy a glock for 50 bucks on a street corner.
In my youth, when life seemed much more dangerous, I used both strategies to great success. But as I've grown older and much more vulnerable in a wheelchair, I have become fearless in the mean streets. Either ignored or not challenged because I appear to be too vulnerable.
My hidden strategy is that this 500 pound electric wheelchair could easily break the leg of any attacker feeling that his shin had been hit by a sledgehammer when I drive directly into him. Thankfully for any potential attacker, I haven't had to use that strategy… Yet.
