Oh but you hooked me on these old car stories of your recollection. But you also had "The" car each time and more "Ooohs and Ahhhs" to go with it. Man, I wish I had me a pal named Wayne back when. You lucky dog you.
Our assistant scoutmaster, district Chevy sales manager, gave us a ride in a red 57 Chevy convertible in September 1956. He said later that it was the biggest lemon he ever drove–in the shop 60 times during the two months he drove it to Chevy dealers.
In December 1956, my dad took ownership of a specially ordered 57 Ford Fairlane 500, black with a 312 CID 4 barrel carburetor. I was the big stud on campus driving around picking up chicks. We had 8 inches of snow our Junior prom May 8, but I navigated all over town without bending the car. Won of few drag races .
Bought back Dad's 57 in 1962, from a schoolteacher, complete with Mom's dented fender that I replaced and had the engine overhauled at 60,000 miles. With standard steering, I had to quit driving the 57 when I got paralyzed in 1963. Bought the $100 rusted out 57 Desoto that I could drive and sold the 57 Ford.
Now you've reminded me of my very first car - a turquoise '62 Belair Convertible with a leaky transmission and a top that wouldn't go back up without lots of help. I only paid two hundred bucks for 'Belle' and I often rode around in the rain with her top down - but I didn't care - I had a car!
Way back when you bumped up the 57 they did not have drunk driving laws that I know of, as in 1975 I wrecked/totalled my 68 torino GT & was smashed drunk and the state cops just took me home, gave me a ticket for careless driving & said they would let my dad "handle", read, KILL, me...LOL, Ed
Join me as we travel together on the road called "Aging." I will be sharing my personal experiences with you and offer ideas on how we can better navigate the complex byways of our older years. Grief, healing, generations, ancestors, and more.

Our paths crossed as you can see.
