The man lay quietly prone as if sleeping,
All earthly cares laid aside for safe keeping.
A hushed silence with amplitude filled the room,
Pungent incense wafted amid flowers in full bloom.
The body now lay supine and never to arise again,
A storybook now closed on once upon a time and then.
What was left of the man still lay placidly on the face,
The fingers, legs, toes now immobile with undue haste.
The face, once lively expression, in death now wooden,
Once a wealth of emotions, now as a child’s sorely chidden.
The face still framed as in life with old-fashioned whiskers,
Sunburned and blotchy as though recovering from blisters.
He had the look of an old farmer or sea captain in leathers,
He no doubt worked outside, familiar with all weathers.
Grey cascading curls now surrounded the venerable head,
The man’s features giving the air of being frozen instead.
The death mask, ah the one mask that will never be lifted,
Now that the soul has moved on and elsewhere drifted.
We wear a series of masks all our lives in search of peace,
This mask gives nothing away but its feeling of release.
If its true that each moment is both birth and death then is it any wonder people are more interested in the past than the future. Perhaps if we all stayed focused on the present the world would be a better place altogether.
The ancients always seem to want to honor their leaders with a good impression. Knowing what happened to animals and men in death, disturbed them greatly. So, to keep their leaders immoral in the afterlife, these death masks were made in several ancient civilizations.
Unfortunately, they are only masks and are not the original leader who they portray.
Alright, John!! Excellent write! "We wear a series of masks all our lives in search of peace,...." . My goodness this is so true. Looking back at pictures taken 20 years ago I wonder who I "was" when looking at somebody who looks like me. Mind blowing stuff, John!!
Ah yes, the past participle of "to chide", or to scold, to chastise, to reprimand. I'll see if I can add a few more words to Jerry's vocabulary in future, although he does pretty well with the words he has. John
In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
Contraband Marriage, traveling along the hemline of loving after incarceration, is a love story written in lyric and free form, set in reality with a different ever after.
