Final Steps
By John Herlihy

I take in my stride the final steps in my walking,
Although I do sense a presence behind me stalking.
Those feelings now long gone; I feel no longer prone.
There once was a time when I felt completely alone;
But those times long gone as I feel ready on my own.
The road I have taken has been long and arduous;
Some setbacks have led me down paths incongruous.
This does not mean I have abandoned my own style;
I kept my shoes polished and never got myself riled.
Life is too short for us to become unduly distracted,
To run toward any flimsy whim whenever contacted.

Life offers a cornucopia of attractions and pleasures,
Even if I never had any interest in hoarding treasures.
If any success, money, and recognition came my way,
I simply took these trinkets in stride and turned away.
Now my steps have slowed considerably in my walking;
Friends have died or gone away, so no need for talking.
I was approached recently with an awkward question,
One that felt uncomfortably like a compelling suggestion.
If I could live life over, would I repeat what had been?
I shake my head thinking: Once is enough, never again.

It's an interesting question if I would relive my life. Up to recently I would have said quite bluntly, no way in hell! Being afflicted with a mental illness that went undiagnosed and thus untreated for so long, was just too painful to do over again. But in the past couple of years I've found a kind of equilibrium that hints at better times to come. So,who knows? I may actually have a second half to my life that would be worth experiencing again.

No, never again is ok with me, too!
Now the reincarnation which unsettles
me to say the least. Thoughts to ponder.

I really like the honesty in that last line. If someone asked me that, I could be arrogant and say that I would live it exactly as I have. But, given my circumstances, I would have lived it much differently knowing what I know now. And, even if I didn't know what I know now, I probably would have taken different turns in the road.

You pose an interesting question, "If I could live life over, would I repeat what had been?". LOL!!! Well, if I could remember what I did in my previous life and could avoid them in the next, I'm game! 'Enjoyed!!

Love ya!

I agree; and how! because what you've described above concerns all and sundry; there is no other way if we are honest to ourselves. This conclusion is the most optimistic point in your 'pessimistic' poem, John. Cheers, alex

Where many of those who would say they would like to live their lives over, I would stand strong beside you in saying hell no never again. Now that brings up the question in my mind of reincarnation, which I believe in. I certainly would say yes, because reincarnation as I understand it merely transfers your spiritual self into another body. You will still be you although in a higher power, but you will have a different body. Therefore you may indeed come upon another reincarnated person and you can have a "flash" of recognition. Okay, I'm getting words, better stop. It is mindbogglingly to say the least.

Excellent, excellent! Loved those last 2 lines. If I could do it all over again, I'm sure I'd end up making the same stupid mistakes. They've made me who I am.

I hear you. Personally I've heard the question asked many times over the years. Never could answer it honestly. Still can't. We're all headed in the same direction, though, and when we reach the end, the road branches right and left. Enjoyed. Peace. r

When we look back at our past we realize, that once was enough round this world of ours. We ought never lose the hope, of completing the circle. "Sigh, we do our best" thanks for sharing your thoughts today John xo
