The Hallowed Drum
By John Herlihy

Rhythmic and deep, a profound inner pounding,

Flashes of sound with whole worlds resounding.

Mystery lies within us that desires to be heard,

Revelatory impulses echo from the eternal word.

At first we hear only silence impersonating sound,

Then we realize something is happening all around.

I notice a pulse beat within to establish my rhythm,

The rhythm comes to life emerging as light hidden.

A secret drum lies within made of echoes and sighs,

The drum inspires visions to guide me with its eyes.

Magnetic, inspiring, faint sounds as the drum spoke,

The drum is my inner voice of conscience remote.

A thousand years pass but the drum always beats,

This inner sounding a conscious awakening meets.

I step gingerly to the sacred rhythms I hear within,

The journey lasts a lifetime, each step I newly begin.

INDEED. THIS REMINDS ME OF WHEN I 'EARNESTLY' SURRENDERED MY LIFE TO CHRIST...'NEVER' TO TURN AROUND AGAIN. THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY TIMES THAT I HAD STARTED OUT BUT TURNED BACK. BUT THIS TIME, I BECAME ACUTELY AWARE THAT I HAD BECOME A MEMBER OF A 'DIFFERENT' ARMY...AND WAS MARCHING TO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DRUM BEAT. THE JOURNEY DOES LAST A LIFETIME AND EACH STEP IS 'NEW' FROM FROM DAY TO DAY, FOR WE CHANGE AS WE GROW AND ARE DRAWN INTO A CLOSER RELATIONSHIP WITH...OUR 'LEADER'. THANKS FOR SHARING. I have a goat skin drum at home. I used to belong to a drumming circle years ago. You describe the journey well, I am glad to see you have a strong spiritual side. Nice write John x

The drum is a primal instrument that mimics the sound of our heartbeat. Your poem brings out that fact of life that still beats stronger today than ever before.

a drum is an instrument of inspiration; its hollow sound with a myriad of tints and tones embodies the Yang (masculine) forces in general; therefore, it is a non-fungible thing on the battlefield. . . I tend towards Jerry's warning about the nature of drum's beat ;)) Cheers, alex

I love this! The drum has the ability to bring forward the spirit and its wisdom...........almost hypnotizing. It moves us physically and spiritually.

Sound the drum for what the drum imparts, but be careful, be very careful, the drum can be up to playing dirty tricks.
