Unsuspecting things arrive without notice,
Ripples in a still pond will disturb the lotus.
We think we know ourselves, what we dare,
Only to learn thinning threads find no repair.
Amazing butterflies freed from broken eggs,
The hint of destiny found within coffee dregs.
The praying mantis in prayer on bended knees,
Woodpeckers knocking on doors of aging trees.
How peculiar to walk but have no place to go,
Why sad events happened I will never know.
How fearful it is to awaken from my dreams,
Only to realize that life is not what it seems.
How unexpected if sorrow knocks on my door,
I fall on my knees, then down flat on the floor.
How surprising to learn a friend is but a foe,
She turned into a stranger, not a beloved doe.
I once became the victim of a cruel kindness;
What I thought a mercy became a blindness.
Doubt has a subtle way of invading the mind;
Despair brings a dark spirit of another kind.
As I walk along, my step suddenly skips a beat;
I am missing something, these feelings repeat.
One day we are surrounded by bliss, by love;
The next we are enveloped in this tight glove.
Where does my fear stop and courage begin?
What identifies feelings of loss and chagrin?
Eternity so eternal, time could no longer tell;
Infinity so infinite, space fell into a deep well.
We may never really know the full extent,
Of the trials and tribulations our way sent.
What matters is the way we face our destiny;
Be thankful for what we have of life’s plenty.

We all have many unique situations, don't we? John Lennon said it best, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.". Heartaches and happiness all mixed into one!
"The best laid plans of mice and men…" Your poem illustrates how difficult it is to plan for any future when at any time, unexpected complications can occur. Life is full of surprises that we have to be prepared for. If not financially, at least we must be spiritually aware that we cannot predict and avoid everything.
Life does have its ups and downs, as well as many twists and turns. As they say, expect the unexpected. In particular, I loved the last stanza. Those 4 lines summed everything up nicely.
"What matters is the way we face our destiny" you have penned a very powerful line here. It concretes the rest of the poem and gives it the empowerment it needs. Again, nothing but talent shown here. Have a great day John, xo
Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
