When is the first moment of wondrous splendor?
The baby beholds its mother with feelings tender.
New life begins as a ball of yarn ready to unravel;
The soul journey begins at the sound of life’s gavel.
The infant’s wide world awaits with no compromise;
The world itself draws upon the element of surprise.
When is the monumental moment never before missed?
A teenage boy wonders why he has never been kissed.
Her red cloak set her apart as she moved in the crowd;
The wave of her blue-eyed glance made him feel proud.
A mystery suddenly unveiled from deep within her eyes;
No doubt, she was relying on the element of surprise.
Life contains moments that will never be missed!
Feelings of foreboding to cloud the mind and insist.
Doubt creeps into our hearts that we cannot maintain;
Despair overlays the soul that we can never sustain.
We feel hurt, we are depressed, we see our demise,
Until fate turns a corner with the element of surprise.
Despite the journey, there have been roads not taken;
Decisions at crossroads that later became forsaken.
The ghosts of seasons past often linger in the wings;
Eerie wind not only howls in our ears, it often sings.
Just when we may least expect it, the moment arrives;
When destiny does knock with the element of surprise.
When is the last moment of life before a person dies?
Captured in memoriam before the lids close our eyes.
The moment will arrive that no one could ever foretell;
Before silence invades, there is a final tolling of a bell.
Imagine the wonder to have shed all that we despise;
Behold in celestial glory the final element of surprise.
I look forward with small trepidation of that final element of surprise, but I am not afraid of this thing we call death, it is but a door to another plain, just not somewhere that we can totally explain...-e-
A wonderful way to think of death as the 'final element of surprise.' If I should be so lucky to think this way when the time comes. I would be happy and content. I fear the final surprise might scare me, instead of bringing me peacefully to the other side.
It sounds like you lived a very good life. It gave you material to write about it, I see it beautifully displayed here. Thanks for sharing another lovely poem xo
I was sure surprised when I picked "123" and played it back to back. I was surprised again when my now ex-husband kept it! Yes, there are good and bad surprises! Great write!
A lifetime of potential surprises. Some we get and some we don't (got my first kiss well before 16). That last one is a guess, because, as far as I know, no one has lived to tell about it. Except, of course, Jesus Christ. Giving everyone hope that they would turn out just like him.
Ahhh, what a sunkissed element of surprise throughout our lifetime, John. Even those elements of surprise that we'd rather not like, still it is given to us without our blessings. But when that element of surprise is sweet and soul satisifying, THOSE are the ones we most assurdely cherish.
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
Love ya!
