The Unhappiest Moment
By John Herlihy

When happiness arrives, we know it is there,
Tucked into forgetfulness my lasting despair.
Dawn arrives, the sun shines, flowers bloom,
Swept away into oblivion all feelings of doom.
When I feel happy, I could shout to the rafters,
Brimming with joy induces unbridled laughters.
When asked what in life is my happiest moment,
No peak stands out amid mountains of enjoyment.

When unhappy moments arrive, we feel them so near,
The heart a bubble pierced by the sharp point of a spear.
We whisper thoughts to friends of emerging despair,
Even though reluctant these empty feelings to share.
A kind word from a friend often has the magic touch,
Loneliness instills pain, while friendship means much.
But no words can describe a fall into the darkest well,
The unhappiest moment of all that I could never tell.

It's nice to enjoy many happy moments in life to the point where no one peak stands out. As for the darkest valley, I hope the reason you can't tell us because it hasn't happened to you.

The juxtaposition of mountain peaks and a bubble pierced is adroitly used to drive home there are many degrees of both sadness and happiness. A well balanced work of metaphor and actuality.

"friendship means much."!!! Oh, how true. Sometimes it takes a while to "reach out" but no matter when, you know a friend will still be there. Such a meaningful write!

Love ya!

Oftentimes, these brief moments of happiness fuel our existence, however fleeting, until the next one comes along.
