Known Through the Years
By John Herlihy

When you are young, it doesn’t matter,
Everyone knows you through the years.
They knew you an as infant in diapers;
They remember your childhood mementos.
They knew you when you were first kissed;
You called them when you felt they were missed.
Old friends attended your university graduation;
Distant relatives responded to your salutation.
They attended your first and even second wedding;
When children came, they sent you cradle bedding.
The thread linking the years, steady friends around;
They knew things about you that makes you sound.
With understanding, they followed my tribulations;
Many of them helped, even against my protestations.
There is comfort in knowing people your whole life.
Bringing continuity to the table thru all of life’s strife.

As you age, regrettably, it does begin to matter;
Some people only knew you after becoming fatter.
The line that connects us begins to get thinner;
Few of us became saints, more than a few sinners.
All those childhood friends are now long since gone,
Living different lives and singing a different song.
Gone are those with whom I made first holy communion;
I am not one to attend the 50th-year high school reunion.
University friends dispersed into their various careers;
I know one of them ended up having a family in Algiers.
I ended up living in a multitude of different countries;
Strangers became friends for a time in the 70s, 80, and 90s.
By the millennium, nobody knew me for who I really am;
Not a single person knew me from the days in my pram.

I have a picture of myself from my 20s that I show to people;
Sipping coffee in a Spanish plaza, in the shadow of a steeple
In winter, looking stylish and young, holding a felt fedora,
A long and unexpected life before me, waiting for mañana.

GREAT PICTURE! I ENJOYED THE WRITE BUT REALLY I CAN'T RELATE TO IT...VERY MUCH. I THANK GOD FOR FAMILY, OF COURSE, BUT I ONLY HAVE ONE PERSON, WHOM I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR, THAT'S KNOWN ME AND THAT'S BEEN WITH ME THROUGH ALL THE YEARS...AND THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.

Isn't this the truth! (Sweet photo, by the way.) "Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold."

Love ya!

What a worldly philosopher/professor persona shown in that revealing photo. And that magnificent head of hair. I believe you miss that like I miss mine as she shaves off more each time she cuts my hair.

Boyish looking and skinny, I couldn't strike that kind of pose.

Oh, the poem! I did go to my 50th and shocked some of the people there arriving in a wheelchair and with an Asian partner and gay helper. They all had grown terribly older and many of them out of touch in their small circles of life. But the beauty (some of the girls still looking like girls) and the genius (an old friend wise beyond any years) were still there.

When we're young, we go to birthday parties and weddings. As we get older, we go to funerals. You described our advancing years brillantly, and what a head of hair you had. Did you wear bell bottoms too?

An interesting insight into your life. I can relate to certain aspects. I too lived in various countries: Canada. The Yukon Territories. Switzerland. Germany. Holland. The Azorean Archipelagos. I didn't attend any of my High School reunions either. That photo reminded me of some Jack London poses in his early days. Enjoyed. Peace... r

I look forward to your poems each and every morning. I learn a bit more each day of the man behind the scenes. I think he is quite amazing, you have a beautiful mind, one that produces the best fruit. Thank you for sharing today, lovely photo of you. It captures your spirit well. I can't wait to see what you'll share tomorrow. I wrote a poem about Yesu today, Please give me your opinion, it matters, thanks, Vienna.
