Celestial Cords
By John Herlihy

You play sweet music on my flute,
The notes light and lilting as air in a chute.
The melody thick with milky cream emotion,
Slicing through my heart with warm devotion.
Thru rhythmic breathing, I seek pure vibration,
Until I arrive on a plateau of earnest sensation.

You play percussion music on my drums,
The beats run thru me down to my thumbs.
The heart beats, but the drums within rockin’,
With the steadiness of a clock tick-a-tockin’.
My journey of footsteps walk to a rhythmic beat,
Whether in the winter cold or in summer’s heat.

You play sad music on my violin,
The notes long and melancholic deep within.
Feelings that come from some foreign country,
Offering up a taste of some unwanted bounty.
No one can escape sadness in life’s territory,
Only learn from life’s sorrows on fate’s promontory.

You play profound music on my base cords,
Notes that I sometimes think life never affords.
Sometimes, I awake mornings mumbling a dirge,
Other mornings I feel filled up with a happy urge.
Your base cords provide me with a sound foundation,
Drawn from the universal bounty of sublime creation.

I am the emotive violin with which You speak,
I am the sweet cadence of the lilting flute that I seek.
I am the percussion drums with which my heart beats,
I am the base cord with which my soul your Spirit meets.
Together, these divine instruments unite as a secret cord,
Inspired by the harps and harmonies of the celestial horde.

You have conjured up a lovely somewhat "chamber music" type ensemble. You stirred up emotions and reasons. 'Enjoyed.

Love ya!

From sounds in nature like the wind and the sudden clap of thunder, our music instruments were born to imitate, emulate and enhance what we already heard. You have so beautifully described these instruments of emotion that touches all with the beauty of their performance.

I am also amazed at how the human voice can transform an ordinary message into an extraordinary performance of love, sadness or anger which is singular note held high or the harmony of many voices multiplying each other. If it weren't for these instruments of passionate beauty, life would be a much duller place to live.
