The Forces of Regret
By John Herlihy

In our sinews quietly live the forces of regret,
Intentions and actions we might never forget.
Longing for a time when innocence was near,
Longing for a place where shadows held no fear.

A wrong decision leads to results most morose,
That gnaw edges of our heart drawing ever close.
I regret I wasn’t kinder to strangers that I met,
Their kindness to me always a source of regret.

That bungled love, an untimely death, all lost,
Many incidents gone, somehow at great cost.
Sadness lies deep, regret my serenity steals,
Why swallow our days with useless appeals.

Do an evil deed and you will no doubt lament,
We cure penitent sadness with good will spent.
Who has not lived, lost, seen the watches of night,
Words left unsaid, deeds undone, with no delight.

Regret happily rides the wings of shame and guilt,
Clouding our days until our moody emotions wilt.
Regret shall find its harvest in the frontiers of evil,
Searching amid the caverns within life’s upheaval.

Pieces of our lives slip away that we often forget,
Forgetting only arouses deeper feelings of regret.
As the days pass, let regret be on the lips of others,
Regret serves no useful purpose and only smothers.

IN LIFE, REGRET IS NECESSARY. FOR IT IS 'GROWING-UP' AND ACKNOWLEDGING ERROR AND IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE ALL EXPERIENCE. WE DON'T 'WALLOW' IN IT BUT WE FACE IT AND MOVE ON TO THE BEGINNING OF FORGIVING, BEING FORGIVEN, HEALING...AND LIGHT. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Regret does not serve any purpose, but it's an important emotion to have. Some people don't know from this emotion as they live their empty lives.

The Finnish have no word for regret. They consider it, "Vanhaan lunta.", (old snow). I follow that line of thinking. 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!

I certainly like the way you ended this poem that was getting very morose and downhearted. We can't let our mistakes overpower us. We all make them. The important thing is to learn from each mistake and do better the next time that situation comes up. The less we regret, the better we feel about ourselves.

the poem hits right with its such a complex issue called 'regret,' which is the worse one can bear within oneself. A good fortune or ill one, we are ready to accept their alternation throughout life, . . but as for regret, as it is mentioned here, its worm gnaws us from inside to show our ignorance towards the way of living. A great writing. Cheers, alex

Wise words here. I've heard it said that the best we can hope for, is to end up with the right regrets.

I agree with your poem John, Regret is of no use to us, it only leads to sadness and depression. Despite the knowledge, we still delve in it. Human nature I guess. If only we realized the fact that destiny has a will of its own, often opposed to ours. May your Christmas be bright , empty of regret and full of hope and promise, love and light,

When we are younger we absolutely rue our ways of treating those we come across in life. Would we have that mindset we attain when we are older and make the world and those around us feel better as we chance upon them.

Visions of A Skylark Dressed in Black by Aberjhani
