Beneath the Veil
By John Herlihy

The girls come in the morning,
The girls go home in the evening.
Each student a unique flower petal,
One student evokes the femme fatale.
Draped head to foot in searing black,
Adorned as in a diaphanous sack.
The veil covers the student’s face,
The eyes remember the human race.
As she talks, she is one of the pack,
As she walks, she goes clackety-clack.
On her hands, black gloves,
In her eyes, fluttering doves.
The perfume of exotic aroma,
The handbag Dolce Gabbana.

I fall deep into those almond eyes,
There in white porcelain in surprise.
She turns away with those alluring eyes,
The moment has passed and now dies.
In steady echo, I hear a sharp refrain,
Clickety-clack across the tiled terrain.
There she goes, surveying the views,
Strutting away in high-heeled shoes.
As I stand there in the desert dust,
With a final breath of scented musk.
I a humble professor in bow tie,
Fall into the well of fantasy, oh my,
Feeling emboldened and sly,
By this mysterious creature,
A veil her most telling feature.

I DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND THE DEPTH OF THE VEIL AND, IN SOME CASES, EVEN MUCH MORE COVERING. BUT I WOULD GATHER THAT ONE OF ITS OBJECTIVES IS TO CAUSE ONE TO REMEMBER THAT THE EYES IS THE WINDOW OF THE SOUL ALSO...THE LAMP/LIGHT OF THE BODY. AND I WOULD THINK THE 'AROMA' ILLUMINATES THE PATH OF 'INTRIGUE' THAT IS DEFINITELY FOSTERED. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

She might be cloaked in black but her individuality shines through in her fancy bag and high heel shoes. She leaves behind a fragrance to remind you of her when she's gone.

So mysteriously sensual, John. You write with class. 'Love it!

Love ya!

The beautiful eyes hint at what the veil hides, inviting the imagination to envision the rest of her face. The expensive accessories only add to her mystery. Well done!

You reveal so much about your sensitive side here dear John, an open heart is a blessing , so is beauty. Thank you for sharing this softly spoken poem, have a wonderful day.

The eyes have it in this seductive tale of a poem. Although she was made to be hidden from lust, her talent shown through. And you caught it perfectly.

You have reminded me of teaching at Marshall University where there were a lot of Iranian students, sent by the Shah before he fell from grace. Although she was dressed in Western clothes, one girl seemed much more mature and strikingly beautiful than the other students. And, her intelligence was in competition with her beauty.

It's always of great interest (to me) what blossoms in the mind when it is confronted with unexpected beauty. And then how the afterglow of it stays with you fragrantly in your senses- sometimes for days. Related to this. Well done. r

yes, due to the cloaked garment called 'yashmak' the feminine mystique cannot sink into oblivion. However, that's not the whole point. As a matter of fact, it's all about the movements and gestures a feminine individual does, the whole beauty is there. that's the essential fruit, all the rest, such as perfume, DG, high-heeled shoes, etc. are the flowers, hull. A sensitive piece. Cheers, alex

I imagine it's all in the dramatic and expressive eyes of these veiled beauties, along with the alluring scents they waft. Feminine mystique cannot be cloaked into oblivion.
