From the Distance
By John Herlihy

Distance offers us a variety of insights to share;
The vantage point of distance makes us aware.
To offer a comprehensive view to a grand totality,
With remote detachment as characteristic tonality.

Distance tends to reduce everything down in size,
Shrinking everything in size without compromise.
While things nearby can be used in ready employ,
Things fade into the distance to become but a toy.

Distant storms are of very little use to nearby fires;
But distant love inevitably our tender heart inspires.
Shadows in the distance I cannot fully comprehend;
But up close, I easily observe the twilight descend.

As initially the ever big becomes the ever smaller,
Turning miniscule in size, as if it were never taller.
As children, everything appears as truly oversized,
Lost amid many knees and ankles as a thing prized.

Distance but a figment of our frayed imagination,
The far-away moon creates an intimate sensation.
Remote stars know nothing of our sense of gravity;
Yet from the distance they fill our hearts with levity.

Distant happiness, distant friends, and distant love,
One of the pair is still missing, there is a lost glove.
Distance yawns and we then fall in, feeling love lost,
In wanting to be there, I know I am not there, at cost.

Distance enrobes the mountains into misty grandeur;
We gaze upon such remote majesty like a shy voyeur.
From the distance, we see the forest, but not the trees;
Heaven lies in the distance that we seek on bent knees.

Sheer distance resurrects memories to appear sweet,
Echoes of a distant harmonica or flute we gladly meet.
We delight in dreams because of their sheer distance;
Reality might seem otherwise with nagging insistence.

I feel as the ant seeking to understand the macrocosm;
When what lies before me is but a baffling microcosm.
A spirit of discovery and hope lies on the distant horizon,
To raise our spirits on high and our self-awareness widen.

The distance of the past will always remain in safe-keeping;
The distance of the future always draws nigh, ever-seeking.
I hear voices, I listen to music, I feel harmony and peace,
All enchanting from the distance, hopefully never to cease.

I WOULD SAY, THE ILLUSION OF WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL, ON ANY ASPECT, FROM A DISTANCE...CAN BE TOTALLY SHATTERED FROM AN UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. SO, SOMETIMES DISTANCE IS GOOD, WITH FRIENDSHIPS ESTABLISHED WITHIN ITS REALM STANDING THE TEST OF TIME. BUT THEN...SOMETIMES DISTANCE IS NOT GOOD FOR, AS YOU SAID, THE 'COST' OF IT CAN BE GREAT, ESPECIALLY IN MATTERS INVOLVING THE HEART. CERTAINLY SOMETHING TO MUDDLE OVER, THANK YOU JOHN. A WELL DONE WORK, ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I've heard it said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. Then again, I've heard it said that distance makes the heart go wander. Hmmmmmmmmmmm......!! "All enchanting from the distance, hopefully never to cease."..........so eloquently written!

Love ya!

what is far away from us seems to be cold; what is nearby warm, sometimes even hot. So, why do we long for what is far from us? Why we always return to the place from where we set off? The reason is that we do not believe in sameness, pursuing diversity in all things.

This solid piece, using the term 'distance', speaks of what is close to us, of our insatiable curiosity and a spirit of adventure to explore the world and ourselves in it. Cheers, alex

Constantly amazed how you seem to have a savant way of taking a word like, "distance," and make so much of it. I prefer brevity over wordiness, but there is a kind of magic in which you write.

Most creatures, especially if they are predators or the pursued, I have two eyes in order to discern three-dimensional images and distance. Thus, through practice and experience, we humans can get a feel for distance merely by looking at it. What a wonderful trait!

The musings in this are noteworthy and can be expounded upon in various ways. Distance (aloofness) and proximity (closeness) both impart wisdom in their own special ways. Enjoyed. Thanks. r

You flat out zeroed in on exactly what it takes minimize our problems . . . Distance. You bet. Works nearly all the time. Stay away, put distance from whatever is making your life miserable and it things will get better. Great work!

Distance and time do have a way of smoothing the rough edges of our lives. I especially liked the 4th stanza with the reference to children and size. It's amazing how our perceptions change, and it's always refreshing to see the world through a child's eyes.
