I still half expect letters from my mother,
The memory of her devotion impossible to smother.
I still half wait for them in a corner of my mind,
To have all of her news with nothing left behind.
What she had accomplished, when and what about,
To ensure she was in good health and relieve my doubt.
My mother and I used the letters our link to survive,
We exchanged these letters to keep our love alive.
Because of distance, there were two weeks leeway,
Pauses in the news about what we had to say.
Still the continuity and consistency were preserved,
If confusion arose in the narrative, the details blurred.
The mystery of life in this world never sets us free,
I am old now, an image my mother will never see.
She told us that in her dreams we kids were forever young,
While in my mind, the memory of my mother forever old.
Individual life histories have their moment in letters spun,
Preserved as sacred memories that are forever retold.
I still half expect to see those familiar aerogram letters,
To release me into the past, free of these future fetters.
HOW WONDERFUL ARE THE TREASURED MEMORIES THAT FLOW AND GO ON... COMPENSATING...FOR THE PHYSICAL THINGS WHICH HAVE LONG CEASED. IMMENSELY ENJOYED, JOHN...THANK YOU FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Those letters will mean more than anything to you! The letters I used to get from my mother were always full of the latest news of the area and her handwriting which was written with a bit of a flair of script. Her words comforted me. 'Enjoyed!
When you mentioned that in your mother's mind you were forever young, it reminded me of my mother. In the end, as her dementia worsened and with her sight gone, she told me that I wasn't her daughter for her daughter was a small girl. I remember her as an old woman, but maybe later in the years, I'll remember her when she was still young and took me for walks. Our memories play tricks with our minds. It's good that you have fond memories of your mother. Hold them close.
Yes, indeed there are those with wonderful memories of their mothers, and that is how it should be. Then there are those like me, with memories not so pleasant.
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
