A SENSE OF PRIDE
By John Herlihy

The questioner mutely asked,
As though responding to a task:
Why do we feel a sense of pride,
That arrives when we succeed?
Why do we feel a sense of peace,
The pride is but a form of greed?
To succeed where other failed
Accords a rightful sense of power.
To accomplish what you nailed
Brings glow to the passing hour.
It makes you feel so much better
Than a less effective someone else.
You then feel so much respected,
Your joy surges in a racing pulse.
What to expect but emerging pride,
To be important all the worldwide.

The replier then astutely asked,
Only now feeling up to the task:
How can we feel a sense of pride,
To come when we don’t succeed?
How do we feel a sense of peace,
That may not draw on our greed?
A sense of success can energize,
As it seeps into the happy mind.
While failure may not demoralize,
Producing a joy of another kind.
An act of doing brings satisfaction,
A poem written and read a miracle.
A lack of success needs no retraction,
The poem will always remain lyrical.
The act of doing brings its own pride,
A true emotion no one needs to hide.

AS LONG AS WE DON'T WEAR 'PRIDE' AS A CROWN AND WE REMEMBER TO GIVE THE GLORY FOR ALL ACHIEVEMENTS TO GOD, FIRST, WHILE RECOGNIZING EVEN THE FAILURES HE ALLOWS ARE FOR OUR GOOD, THEN INDEED...A SENSE OF PRIDE IS A WONDERFUL THING AND CERTAINLY NEEDS NO EXCUSE. DONE WELL AND ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

The effort to exercise a non-destructive pride is adroitly stated in this well worded exercise in persuasion. Too often, the misinterpretation of a feeling of accomplishment is foisted upon one's surroundings as false pride. False, because the danger of hubris and self-centered importance is becoming more of the norm today, especially with the encouragement of taking credit for something another person did, i.e., Trump. Need I say more.

The act of doing and trying accounts for something. Whether we succeed or not, we did our best.

A little pride, like ego, is a good thing. It allows us to believe in ourselves. But to much pride or ego, and we become bores. As in all things, moderation is necessary, we need to find the right balance.

Your poem always make me think. This one reminds me of my pride. My pride is being able to be a Caregiver due to my Medical Assisting education. Great write!

Love ya!

Yep, pride is good for the well-being of the individual if it doesn't take over the the whole of a person.
