Forgive Me My Sins
By John Herlihy

My sins, how they are amounting,
Into a mountain, who’s counting.
At first, I hardly paid any attention,
Sins are not objects of retention.
When they are stacked together,
They seem to herald foul weather.

If only I could bid them good riddance,
And be done with them for a pittance.
My wrong-doings cost me far too much,
A millstone around my neck and such.
My sins multiply without true repentance,
Assuming a bold face with no recompense.

What on earth should a person wish to do,
Resolve this dilemma from what I knew.
At least my sins are not truly predictive,
Although suffice to say they are addictive.
Our darker side is a natural propensity,
That finds its voice with certain intensity.

Lack of blame results from my acumen,
Perfection would make me less human.
I compound the sins I am inclined to,
I do damn the sins I have no mind to.
The slithering serpent makes no sound,
But leaves a fine trail upon the ground.

When committing sins, we are not alone,
But in solitude, we do repent and atone.
They cease to frighten us when shared,
Our burdens lifted and no longer scared.
We purify the soul from its implicit rust,
Before the body dies and turns to dust.

Forgive me my sins, they are truly mine;
Hopefully, my virtues will my life define.

"Sin": all of the letters are silent. it is pronounced "mistake"

You are wasting your mind by thinking of things that cannot be changed. They put erasers on pencils because everyone makes mistakes.

Accept the light of the universe, stand up, praise God and give it all you got!! Do it!! I'm ready to!!

NO, JOHN, WE CANNOT 'WORK' OUR WAY OUT OF SIN WITH OUR VIRTUES BUT, YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD IN THE SECOND STANZA, 5TH LINE, WITH...'TRUE REPTENTANCE' WE ARE FORGIVEN. AND TRUE REPETENTANCE DOES NOT MEAN A BELABORING FORM OF REPTENTANCE IT SIMPLY MEANS, AS THE LAST STANZA, 1ST LINE OF THIS SHARING SAYS; WITH SINCERITY...LORD, FORGIVE ME MY SINS, THEY ARE MINE. INSTANTLY WE ARE FORGIVEN, BUT THE 'STUMBLE' OF THAT IS...TO HAVE THE FAITH TO BELIEVE YOU ARE FORGIVEN AND THEN TO FORGIVE YOURSELF. WE ARE, INDEED, HUMAN - UNABLE TO BE PERFECT BUT DOESN'T OUR HEAVENLY FATHER KNOW THIS? OF COURSE. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY SINFUL FRIEND AND THIS SINFUL FRIEND BIDS YOU...LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATION.

We all sin John, it's in the repentance that we find that virtual line of honesty and acceptance of self and others. I have enjoyed your poem this evening

The only believable part of this tale is that you do (rarely) venture into telling little white lies. But you do it so well that you no doubt have all the angels in heaven yukking it up.

alright, the dark cave is opened again for leaping into the deep. Of course, the cave has no bottom; therefore, Bottom Up toasts frequently within its stone walls.
Now, about recompense. Give one some time to punish oneself after a sin, and that's it. The demons are constantly within us to expose themselves, as it goes, at an unearthly hour.
you're right, John. A bunch of virtues is a balanced solution when perfection of a human being could be achieved at the ratio of 50:50. Enjoyed reading this. Cheers, alex

I hope that you are just delving into a new subject for your poetry rather than actually confessing that you have a large burden of sin that you are holding off with your religious belief that it can be forgiven.

Sin does not burden my conscience. But that behavior does. I try to avoid bad behavior whenever I encounter it. It helps me sleep at night.
