Doors of the Universe
By John Herlihy

Once upon an ancient time,
The doors of the universe were open.
Ancient man beheld nature’s wonder,
Understood every star and galaxy as token.
Mysteries were protected by a transparent veil,
The unknown there humanity’s confidence to assail
Primitive man walked in ignorance. but still knew.
When he gazed overhead, he saw more than blue.
The doors of his universe were fully open, protected.
What surrounding nature offered, he freely accepted.
His doors mirrored universal doors he never neglected.
As a result, certain evils passed him by never suspected.
The stars twinkled mysteries, the moon pulled the tides,
As the sun rose and set, his faith in the universe abides.
But that was once upon an ancient time.

Once upon this modern time,
The doors of the universe now closed.
Modern man beholds nature’s facts in kind,
To know so little and only what he supposed.
Mysteries of the universe now summarily disbelieved;
What we see, hear, smell, taste, touch no longer mattered.
Our imagination leads to only what we have conceived;
The mirror of the universal unknown is now shattered.
The stars and galaxies are still there, and so too the moon;
But the universal door is closed, no access to its inner room.
We have closed the very doors we should demand to be open;
We have deluded ourselves, our illusions now our only token.
The sun rises and sets and yes, night still overtakes day;
Nature leaves us a question to answer in our own way.
But not here, not now, that is for another time.

AMEN...EVER SINCE THAT DOOMED DAY...THE EXTENT OF WHAT WAS COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD AND KNOWN HAS BEEN 'TAINTED'... STEADILY REVERSING, AND WE FIND OURSELVES IN A TIME AND PLACE WHERE WE ARE IN POSSESSION OF ONLY A 'MINUTE PART' OF THAT WHICH WAS AT ONE TIME...FULLY COMPREHENDED. BUT HALLELUJAH, WE SERVE THE ONLY TRUE GOD, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, WHO KEEPS HIS PROMISES AND ONE DAY WITHIN THE LIGHT OF A NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH...WE SHALL, ONCE AGAIN, COMPREHEND ALL. FINE WORK, WONDERFUL! THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I don't know if I believe that people were more spiritual and attuned to nature in ancient times. We did have more prophets and seers, but was the general population more religious? I don't think so. I believe we are still as close-minded as we have always been. Thank you for making me ponder on this a bit.

We will NEVER know what is in the universe that is too far for us to reach. I don't even think any of the Americans had stepped on the moon surfaces. Not with what they had in technologies in those days. The images that came back to earth was too clear, considering the best computers there was did not even hold 512mb of ram. LOL!!!!! There was not supposed to be any moisture on the moon's surface, and yet the astronauts were able to leave their footprints behind. There was not supposed to be air, so there was not supposed to be wind, yet, when the astronauts put up the flag, it was flowing in the wind. There were no stars in the sky that we could see. The moon rocks they've gathered from the moon were claimed to be all lost, along with the tapes of the first men on the moon which they claimed someone had taped over those tapes, and now NASA said the going back to the moon may not be possible until 50 years from now because all the files are lost.

ALL the reports of Mars seem fake, and when they show the earth taken from out in space it is ALWAYS a picture made up of CGI format. There were no real pictures of earth taken from a space station or space shuttle.

NASA is a big lie!!!!

So if you think that humans can get to know about the universe, at least it should begin first with NASA. When we are constantly being lied to then we just have to live the lives that we know of and not worrying about what is beyond.

Beautiful and deep work. We have lost too much in our modern, artificial world.

I find this a rather nostalgic and strange offering from a learned person like yourself. While we may romanticize the life of ancient man, he/she probably lived a life much more stressful and painful than ours. His/Her fears were much greater than ours and often turned to gruesome rituals and practices like animal and human sacrifice just to appease the gods and protect the family or tribe from them and their wrath.

We take for granted so many comforting things and protections these days that ancient man/woman was unprotected from. When we see the night sky without light pollution, and overwhelms us. When ancient man/woman saw the night sky, they used its permanence for navigation. But, were ever fearful of lightning on the skyline triggering a storm or the sounds of wild animals approaching unseen in the dark night.

What once were superstitious beliefs have been replaced by knowledge gain and understanding. There are still plenty of mysteries and wonders to behold.

A succinct and arresting piece of wordsmithing that more than states the malady, but gives comparison to the "once upon a time" era that had the living looking and seeing, not as today where the vast majority look, but don't see. Well done.

Excellent imaginative poetry! I also believe that when one door closes another door opens. Amen

I love this poem! It's message is sadly true. There are some who would easily empathize with ancient man, preferring to ponder the mysteries of life. We know life and the universe are not so easily divided. And lo, what magic can be found in the infinite greatness of our own imagination!
