Everybody has a certain gift and I have mine;
What people wish to hide does in my eyes shine.
I see through the veils of people’s camouflage,
The glitter of a false personality as a corsage.
In their eyes what they worry and dream about,
In their mouths what they lack and shout about.
A psycho-therapist suffers from tinnitus of the ear,
30 years listening to people’s afflictions and fear.
A teacher who ends up suffering poverty of soul,
Giving his heart away that students from him stole.
A writer who fears that he has become a hack,
Unable to finally realize what he may truly lack.
A politician who wins the vote by selling his soul,
Without realizing he will never again be fully whole.
The mannerism, body language, gestures and ticks,
All add up to insecurities to burn down life’s wicks.
Eyes of course are the light that give people away,
Shifty, fitful and vague, they never in one place stay.
The mouth takes second place with its false smile,
Followed by crookedness, sneers as a form of guile.
As for myself, my only camouflage is false modesty,
Fooling everyone into thinking of it as frank honesty.
MY, ISN'T THAT SOMETHING! THAT YOU'VE BEEN ABLE TO CAMOUFLAGE SUCH A TRAIT, JOHN...TSK, TSK, TSK...I WOULD HAVE 'NEVER' KNOWN IT, IF YOU HADN'T 'TOLD' ME(SMILE). ENJOYED, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Why do we hide our lights below baskets? False modesty, indeed. It seems to me that society demands it. For if we allude to our giftedness they no longer see it.

Love, love this! Your understanding of human nature is what makes you a great poet. The eyes reveal it all, but only a select few bother to look or even care. It's true that the mouth is second to tell the tale. And as far as false modesty, I couldn't disagree more. You are honest and sincere to yourself and others. I can't see your eyes or mouth, but the pen also uncovers the backstory.
Politicians are often selling their souls to the devil for political gains. No doubt about it. About camouflage, I believe we all do. Very sad for the teacher what the students have stolen from him. Teachers give their hearts and soul away to the young ones, but the young ones betray them.
EH specially loved the politician lines of this poem. You nailed that one. However the lines about getting tinnitus from listening to people didn't quite "ring" true. (Forgive the puns.) I once went into a store to buy a camouflage shirt, but I couldn't find them.
Nothing like unveiling oneself. Where we like it our not, we all wear camouflage of one sort or another as we travel through life. The secret is knowing how much to wear on any given day.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
