False Hopes
John Herlihy

False hopes do momentarily shine,
Impossible dreams for which I pine.
Such fantasy we dare not question,
We let them just make suggestion.

They lead us down a narrowing path,
Dried petals are left in the aftermath.
All those false hopes seem to invade,
Only to end up as a pathetic charade.

All the while, they glitter and glare,
Into the unknown future I just stare.
See them on the horizon as a dance,
Soon they vanish, gone in a glance.

False hopes resemble failed promise,
They hide behind a thin veil of solace.
False hope offering the pretended lie,
Failed promise only wanted to be sly.

False hopes paper tigers with little bite,
To lure and tempt us as their true right.
They burn with a flame livid and brash,
Only to end up smoldering down to ash.

They are dreams that never come true ,
I did believe in them, even if I knew.
Fare thee well all those false hopes,
You no longer leave me on the ropes.

Oh, if it were so easy to rid those thoughts by merely reciting this poem, you'd be a millionaire overnight, hon!! No one would ever need to suffer love's sting.

Love ya!

WE SAY WE WILL NEVER VENTURE TO 'HOPE' AGAIN BUT WE DO. BECAUSE, REALLY, WE DON'T KNOW IF OUR HOPE IS VALID OR NOT...UNTIL IT PROVES ITSELF TO BE...WHATEVER. WHILE WE HAVE LIFE, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES WE MAY HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED, WE RECALL...THAT TIME...WHEN OUR HOPE WAS REWARDED. SO, WE HOPE...AND...PRAY, AND IN THE END...GOD HAS HIS WAY. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

How will one know in advance that the hope he/she has is going to be false hope? Why did the person hope for it if the person knows in advance that it is going to be false? You always hope for something to happen, and if you didn't expect it to happen then it is not going to be a "hope". You don't expect it to happen so you won't hope for it.

Dreams are different. The poorest person on earth is one who does not hold a dream.

A fine exploration here. I see another aspect to your message as well, which brought to mind a Duncan Campbell Scott stanza:
"From loneliness to loneliness
I felt my spirit grope
At last I knew the uttermost
The loneliness of hope"
Enjoyed your thoughts, John. Peace. r

Michael said it for me also. False hope can, and does many times turn into the real thing.

If it wasn't for false hopes, I wouldn't have any hope at all, so here's to delusion.

I hate having false hopes. Mine nearly always come during my manic moments. I learned the hard way to resist them as are delusional illusions masking my tendency for self destruction.
