 A Taste of Loneliness

By John Herlihy

I am not toward loneliness prone,

Just into the fray of life thrown.

I am not afraid of being on my own,

At peace in my own contented zone.

I do at times have a taste of loneliness,

But the feeling never comes when alone.

What is it that makes a crowd noise-some,

Its frivolous chatter makes me feel glum.

The bird-like voices are not what they seem,

Random sounds highlight my solitary beam.

When deep in a crowd, I wish to escape,

Back to the solitude its peace to partake.

Forcing me to wonder why I stand apart,

When I look deep into the well of my heart.

A moodiness like a wax seal there to affix,

Why can’t I blend like a spice into the mix?

Its glow shines in my heart as moonstone,

Its rays of pale light let me feel like home.

Borrowed from moments of sadness,

As if for our little joys we need to atone.

Then I savor this rare taste of loneliness,

As pale reflection to the pure light of bliss.

Now when I venture deep into the crowd,

Loneliness helps me remember all I miss.

The last line holds true for me. Your gift, your poem, puts the poet "out there"! The artist using words as his tools never stops working. I don't like crowds. Ever! I, too, am loneliest inem. 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!

LOVE THE LAST LINE. IT IS INDEED WHEN WE ARE BLESSED TO 'FEEL' ALONE THAT IT'S ANTIDOTE (FOR ME JESUS) COMES AND FILLS THE NEED, SPLENDIDLY! DONE EXCEEDINGLY WELL AND ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Aloneness is requisite for writers and artistic types. Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted, however, is the most terrible poverty. Good resonance in this piece, John. Peace... r

Being alone is different from feeling lonely. Some feel comfortable in being alone and not having to deal with the dramas from others. I am alone now, I only need to love my family and the few friends who had stayed being friends with me. This is all I need. No more dramas and am quite comfortable.

While I need someone nearby all the time now to continue to live normally, there was a time when I was alone and not necessarily eager to be with anyone. But there were times when I was experiencing something very beautiful, like observing a herd of deer during the rut having all kinds of drama over who would mate with who. And not being able to share what I was seeing and feeling.

For those who are constantly surrounded by others all their life playing a small role in a larger group, I think they lack any opportunity for introspection, so necessary to move forward in our lives to a higher plane of thinking than just doing what everyone else is doing.

Ah, I love the positive ending. Its nice when we can find a balance of aloneness and company, I say if the company is not good, then I'd rather be alone. It makes sense to be discriminate with whom we spend our precious time. A good book can keep us company at times better then any human, Still, we need each other, Have a wonderful Sunday dear friend.

There is much comfort in being alone, especially for a writer who requires solace to create.

one who cannot be alone with one's self is a problematic person. In the Far Eastern countries they use to say, One man is an individual, but more than one is a faceless crowd. For an artist's life, it is the way to run between the two ends, pursuing the point of one's realization. . . time and again, inside and outside, through understanding and misunderstanding, continuously, to the utter end. A truthful piece of an individual experience so much familiar to many real artists. Cheers, alex
