MEMORIES

I try to hold on to very little,

Possessions have no lasting value.

It’s the memories that seem to linger,

But not for long and only for a while.

What happened to all those dreams,

Some turned into unexpected realities.

Others stayed in the clouds, never realized,

Tempting us to make more mistakes.

- - - - - - - - - -

Memories can be rough companions,

They shake us up and throw us about.

Whether it be the thrill of happiness,

Or the throes of a deep sorrow.

They touch us, they hold on,

Only to give back what we in life borrow.

- - - - - - - - - -

Memories have a way of fading on their own,

To become fog, then mist, then wind-blown.

Life is a fire that burns brightly,

A fire that burns down to ash.

In the end, death, standing as sentry,

Walks away with everyone’s memory.

- - - - - - - - - -

Gone, puff, as if no longer reckoned;

Gone, puff, as if they never happened.

A breathtaking poem you have given us to read this day. To summon up thoughts of memories which have left our brain to be capable of resurrecting one lost memory. Enjoyed the poem very much, John.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE QUESTION THE WORD OF GOD WHICH SAYS WHEN WE DIE WE HAVE NO MORE MEMORY OF OUR LIVES BEFORE DEATH. AND I GUESS THIS IS BECAUSE THEY, LIKE ME, HAVE HAD COMFORTING DREAMS OF THE DEAD WITH VERY POSITIVE MESSAGES. AND THIS LEADS THEM TO BELIEVE THAT THE DEAD DO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. THEN I REMEMBER THAT GOD'S WORD IS NOT A LIE, AND HE IS MORE THAN ABLE TO DO WHATEVER HE WANTS. SO INSTEAD OF FRIGHTENING ME, HE SENT A GOOD WORD TO ME IN THE FAMILIAR FORM OF SOMEONE WHOM I'VE VALUED, LOVED, TRUSTED AND RETAIN FOND...MEMORIES. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I was not expecting that ending of doom and gloom. I guess that's why we should write stuff down to preserve some of those memories to share with those that follow us. (something I've been meaning to do, but have never done) And I also find it fascinating how a smell, a tune, a taste, ect. can trigger a memory.

An atmosphere of thoughtful sadness in this. Easy for me to resonate with this kind of honesty. What is our life and cherished dreams, but a moments sparkle on a wind tossed pond. Personally I'm very thankful that some memories fade away, John. Otherwise I'd be an emotional wreck. Enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing. r
