Love-struck
By John Herlihy
Sorrow drags us into a dark place,
Happiness feels like delicate lace.
Our guilt bears the strike of a whip,
Satisfaction come to us sip by sip.
The push of hatred a violent shove,
A touch of love has wings of a dove.
Light of your moon eclipses my sun,
Light of your eyes compare to none.
Destiny holds my life in a firm hand,
Time moves thru me as flowing sand.
Procrastination echoes dug-in heels,
Accomplishment echoes organ peels.
Her voice has the quality of soft music,
Her skin the texture of a budding tulip.
Her sweet laugh sounds of bird-notes,
Her breath divine perfume that floats.
Her blue eyes drawn from heaven’s sky,
No one supposes the true reason why.
Anticipation is perfected in its reality;
Mutual love is enslaved in its finality.
Love is a torment that needs feeding,
The anguish produces good breeding.
its voice has no burden of undertone;
Its virtue reveals all down to the bone.
As love-struck, I experience the blues,
The highs and lows we never choose.
