- They Who Bear Witness -
By John Herlihy

In the silence of the dawn,
I am the first bird,
Mimicking in the receding darkness,
The first song every heard.
In the darkness of God’s outer porch,
I am called the North Star.
I shine thru the heavens as a flaming torch,
A message now brought near, from afar.
In the vastness of the ocean deep,
I am a single wave.
Across the waters, I mount, crest, leap,
To the heavens above, I wave.
In the desolation of the desert,
I am but a grain of sand.
A miracle of millions make undulating dunes,
Each of us humble, yet grand.
In all the wonders of this paradisal garden,
I am but a single flower.
The butterfly drinks from my heart without pardon,
I stand strong as a lofty tower.
In the celestial canopy of the hand-painted firmament,
I am the blue dome of earth.
People take comfort in my color of endearment,
Ever blue since the earth’s birth.
As the earth turns in somber twilight,
I am the full moon.
Rising together with the emerging night,
To wash away the night’s gloom.
In the light of a sun-drenched forest trail,
I am a gentle breeze.
I drift as invisible feathers over hill and dale,
I rustle all of nature with ease.
In the swirling chaos of a windy night,
I am the eye of the storm,
To draw away all impending fright,
To bring peace to a heart forlorn.
I am the Object of every fervent desire,
For those who bear witness and praise,
One sight, one breath, one touch to inspire,
From now until the end of days.

I am the Object of every fervent desire,
For those who bear witness and praise,
One sight, one breath, one touch to inspire,
From now until the end of days.
How beautiful - telling us the connectedness of all things, thus we must respect even a smallest bit of the whole. Every life matters, every breath is a part of something greater. Oh, this is just perfect, dear Poet.
