Peacefulness in a Rocking Chair
By John Herlihy
The rocking chair stood there silent, looked inviting,
Waiting for an occupant to arouse emotions exciting.
Rare emotions that the gentle rocking rouses at will,
Emotions that never emerge when the chair stays still.
Its creaking and squeaking sounds offer some comfort,
Arousing far deeper emotions from the heart to set forth.
Comfort as well in the rhythmic motion a rocker brings,
Combined with all the nobility of the majesty of kings.
As I said, the rocking chair stands quietly on the porch,
Casting long shadows from the sunset’s flaming torch.
Made from a combination of palm threads and bamboo,
Richly hand-made and inventive as anything I ever knew.
The front porch itself provides the perfect rustic setting;
One could easily sit there in peace all the world forgetting.
The beloved chair crafted with loving care by gentle hands,
Out there in the quiet countryside far from urban lands.
The rocking chair needed painting, but nobody really cares.
Does anyone complain to the heavens when the sun glares?
The thin shadows of the tree limbs blow slowly in the wind,
Mimicking the slow rocking of the chair with feelings within.
Whenever I see a rocking chair, I think of my old grandma,
The noble face, the folded hands, peacefulness I ever saw.

and sit a spell.
Your ode to the rocker,
sat very well.
Old rocking chair's got me, my cane by my side,
Fetch me that gin, son, 'fore I tan your hide.
Can't get from this cabin, goin' nowhere
Just set me here grabbin' at the flies round this rocking chair
My dear old aunt Harriet, in Heaven she be,
Send me sweet chariot, for the end of the trouble I see
Old rocking chair gets it, judgement day is here
Chained to my rocking chair.
Old rocking chair's got me, son, (rocking chair got you father)
My cane by my side, (yes, your cane by your side)
Now fetch me a little gin son, (ain't got no gin, father)
What? 'fore I tan your hide, now, (you're gonna tan my hide)
You know, I can't get from this old cabin, (what cabin? joking)
I ain't goin' nowhere. (why ain't you goin' nowhere?)
Just sittin' me here grabbin' (grabbin') at the flies round this old rocking chair
(rocking chair)
Now you remember dear old aunt Harriet, (aunt Harriet)
How long in Heaven she be? (she's up in Heaven)
Send me down, send me down sweet (sweet chariot) chariot,
End of this trouble I see. (I see, daddy)
Old rocking chair gets it son, (rocking chair get it, father)
Judgement day is here, too. (your judgement day is here)
Chained to my rocking, old rocking chair.
Rock on, John!
