- Sometimes You Have To Reach Out –
John Herlihy
Sometimes,
You have to reach out for what you cannot see,
There in the distance, beyond the horizon in me.
I reach out from my comfort zone: do I dare.
What is that in the murky mist, as I stare?
Sometimes,
You have to reach out for what you cannot hear;
The silence is profound, but you feel something near.
There is a music to our living that escapes our grasp;
Intertwined with our struggle and effort as we take to task.
Sometimes,
You have to reach out for what you cannot taste,
Experience beyond reach that we need to embrace.
How can we discover things that we never look for?
How can we built a future, if nothing was built before?
Sometimes,
You have to reach out for what you cannot touch;
The emptiness overwhelming, you know that much.
There is a spirit within us that will come to the fore;
Our cup filled to overflowing, and so much more.
Sometimes,
You have to reach for the good will in others;
The world is a community of sisters and brothers.
What will happen to us if we cannot bond together,
To meet challenges of the world and its changing weather.
Sometimes,
You have to reach out for words you cannot say;
Emotions so deep they are impossible to convey.
Who would even listen to such heart-felt thoughts when found,
There amid the rubble of our troubled soul’s ground.
Sometimes,
You have to reach out to the far distant stars,
Locked within deep outer space like fireflies in jars.
There. time has no meaning, lost within eternity,
To be found at home, in the grace of God’s sublimity.
