- My Own World, My Own Day -

By John Herlihy

I was never meant to be a famous hero,

Always wandering the edges of the dark.

I was never meant to be as Emperor Nero,

Who ended his life as a frightened lark.

Perhaps I am one of those unsung heroes,

People of action who trust what they do.

As they patiently go about their business,

They do bring to life whatever they knew.

My heart is now filled with a fearless hope,

Without any desire to be in public known.

Wisdom can be found in the mind of a dope,

Who weaves golden threads in destiny sewn.

Make me a hero and I will run far, far away,

Seeking peace in my own world, my own day.

There is a subtext here that is symptomatic of this nation's malaise. To be more of what one is, and less of what one fantasizes is more in keeping with contentment, if not delirious happiness. Thanks for posting.

If you are truly writing about yourself and not writing generally, I would agree that a writer like you would want to shun publicity and notice, but secretly would want others to read your poems and comment.

Being your on self, John, is hero enough . . . Tough it out.

Thank God, you weren't born to be Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus. Being you is your only legitimate choice. I have a sign on the wall of my office/shop at work. 'FIND PEACE'. I am amazed John, at how many, in my Dept. (and the other departments) have begun taking that to heart. Enjoyed. Thanks for sharing. Peace... r

Ah, I went to church yesterday and the Minister's sermon was similar to this poem. He said that is he grew older he learned to pray his own way and felt closer to God . Thank you for always sharing your true colors, Love and hugs, xo
