-- Time’s Heartbeat --

By John Herlihy

Time beats steady,

We are seldom ready.

Time always baits,

But time never waits.

The future comes fast,

Disappears in the past.

The past was once present,

The present was once future.

The future dreamed into the present,

The present cursed into the past.

Who can fully understand,

The extent of time’s reprimand.

If only to live out our destiny,

Without the anxiety of time.

The ticking breaks the solitude,

Knocking on the door of loneliness.

The rhythm of time’s beat,

Mimics the rhythm of the heartbeat.

When time finally slows down,

We stare in wonder and look around.

When time will finally disappear,

Never again in its cycle to reappear.

When time’s heartbeats no longer peel,

Eternity will finally its mystery reveal.

'IF ONLY TO LIVE OUT OUR DESTINY WITHOUT THE ANXIETY OF TIME'. INDEED, I LOVE THIS LINE BECAUSE OUR DESTINY IS NOT IN OUR HANDS, THUS, NEITHER SHOULD THE ANXIETY OF TIME BE OURS. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

The time you took to write this was definitely time well spent. Times heartbeat is going to my library.

The past, the present and the future walked into a bar. It was tense.

Your poem, like time, shows how it holds us in its grip and has become such a dependent part of our lives. While other animals surely sense the coming changing of the seasons, only humans have defined time so minutely has to go down into nano seconds and to describe the thousand years as a millennium. But the ticking you refer to comes from mechanical clocks that by their very motion, emitted ticks. Unfortunately, electronic clocks extremely more accurate, don't tick anymore to soothe us, but annoy us with all kinds of other noise.

Keep on ticking (but don't let the bomb go off!) ;-)
