-- Die Before We Die --

By John Herlihy

Oh how we love the self

Cradle its image as an elf

Just me, myself, and I

Nothing else can satisfy

Oh, how I puff and blow

Just to inflate my ego

Don’t blow myself out

A candle now in blackout

Nothing else matters

Life itself in tatters

I write my own story

To shore up my glory

In the mind’s eye

Only on myself to rely

To one goal I strive

To stay awake, alive.

Listen, do I hear a sigh

A soft breeze draws nigh

Faint whispers in the wind

Of only one true Friend

Where can we ever go

Dragging the ego in tow

To the Reality surrender

The Divinity to remember

To witness what God intends

To see thru the Divine Lens

To let the mystery unfold

A story never before told

In eternity to survive

Surrender to come alive

To go beyond the blue of sky

We must die before we die.

I AGREE SO WHOLEHEARTEDLY, JOHN! DIE TO 'SELF'! THE WORD SAYS(PARAPHRASING), LET GOD INCREASE...WHILE WE DECREASE, INDEED. IF WE DO THIS(SURRENDER ALL)IT WILL MAKE THE THOUGHTS OF DYING SO MUCH EASIER. FINE WORK...THIS KEEPER. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

John, this is so true, amazing in the mystery hidden within it. For the sinner, conviction arises as he realizes how guilty he is before God. For the seeker, the Way is revealed.
Yes, we must recognize that we cannot save ourselves and turn to Christ, the only One who has paid for our sins and who will welcome us into His family for eternity.

Excellent, John!

Relationship indeed takes two. Noticing the Other more makes ones self less. Die before we die. Deep!

It's true some people have over-inflated egos. Unfortunately, mine is almost nonexistent. I guess we need a balance in the world.

That phrase reads like a self-fulfilling wish. I sense some regret in the poem that seems to conclude with that circular statement. I believe that I've written of this to you before,, but you seem to be writing more about death these days. Although this one is dated last October.
