-- The Worst Loneliness -–

John Herlihy

Even the worst loneliness isn’t so bad,

A chronic case of the blues I never had.

A lot of things in the night sky, look there,

Those lonely stars on their own as we stare.

The churning of a ship’s wake casts a spell,

Of all the lonely nights fallen down in a well.

Images of loneliness seem to be all around,

The first star of night alone, even if profound.

What about the moon edging over earth’s lip,

Inducing a dreamy solitude within us sip by sip.

The loneliness of travel, being in a strange crowd,

The loneliness in sickness, wrapped in its shroud.

The worst loneliness in the world I never truly knew,

My loneliness never stays long, with the wind blew.

We share a like state of mind, recognizing the various forms of loneliness and being able to deal with it in a positive way. I cherish my loneliness at times, knowing from experience, some of my best thinking gets a chance to express. Thank you for posting.

I enjoy being alone at times. Loneliness, however, is a different issue. I can feel lonely in a room full of people who don't understand me or see me. I'm happy to hear your loneliness fades with the wind.

Your words remind me of the value of "me" time. I love having the family around and going places with friends..............a bit of loneliness~~~~I'd call it "me" time. I enjoy the way you write!!!

Love ya!

The worst loneliness I have found is when I am only one amongst a large group of unknowns or even those that are known but do not care...-e- Excellent write as always, John.

Worst loneliness is sleeping next to someone who no longer cares about you. All else is tolerable or even pleasant. A lonely walk in the woods etc.

Excellently composed, John. I am with you for the most part. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one, my friend.

I have never minded being alone, and quite often I prefer being alone. I need my "me" time.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
